READING TIPS

PRE-READING

  • Have your child look at the front and back cover of the book
  • Let them read the title.
  • Let them predict what they think the story will be about by using the title and the front cover picture.
  • Ask them to identify the author and illustrator.

DURING READING

  • Have your child stop periodically and tell you what the story is about. Have them summarize it in their own words. Then have them predict what they think will happen next.
  • If they have difficulty with a word, have them try to sound it out. Let them look for a word they know inside the difficult word. They can also read the rest of the sentence without the word, to figure out what it is. They can also look at the picture to help them. Then ask them if the word makes sense.
  • If they start to get very frustrated with a word, tell them the word.

AFTER READING

  • Ask your child some questions about the story;
    Where does it take place?
    Who are the main characters in the story?
    What is the problem in the story?
    How did they solve the problem?
    What happens in the beginning of the story? the middle? the end?
  • Ask them what they thought of the story.
    What was their favorite part? the worst part?
    Would they recommend it to a friend?
