Reading Tips
Pre-reading
- Have your child look at the front cover and the back cover
of the book.
- Let them read the title and skim through the picture.
- Let them predict what they think the story will be about.
- Talk about related topics
During Reading
- Have your child stop periodically and summarize what they
have read and predict what will happen will happen next.
- If they have difficulty with a word have them try and sound
it out or they can read the rest of the sentence without the word, have them
look at the corresponding picture, let them look at the first letter of the
word and see what would make sense.
- You can always help them sound out the word with them.
After Reading
- Let your child tell you about the story.
- Ask them what they thought of the story
Most your child should enjoy reading. Let them choose books
they can read and have interest in. Also be a good model, if they see you reading
they will want to do it too.
