Fourth Grade Curriculum

General Information

In fourth grade, we write in cursive. All work should be done in script. Any work that needs to be signed will have a stamp on it that says "Please Sign & Return".

Homework will be given every night, and is expected to be done on time. Completing the reading log for the month is considered part of the homework. If homework is not completed when due, students will record their missing homework and make it up the following night. Once a student misses 3 homework assignments in a marking period, that child will stay in at recess to complete their assignment. When a student has completed all homework assignmentsduring a marking period, that student will receive a homework pass. A homework pass will allow a student to choose a night to miss an entire homework assignment.

All tests will be announced a week in advance in their agenda books. Quizzes will be less than a weeks notice or could be a surprise. All tests and quizzes need to be signed. Quizzes will be averaged together to form one test grade for the marking period. Then all the test grades will be averaged to get a final grade for the marking period.

Language Arts

Language Arts consists of: Spelling, Grammar, Writing and Reading this year. In addition to the stories in our textbook, we read many trade books throughout the school year. You may get to the reading textbook online at: http://www.macmillanmh.com/ose and use access code: D3146428B6

There is a reading requirement per marking period. Log sheets will be given out to the students to keep track of their progress. There will also be bi-monthly reading assignments and book reports.

The date of the ELA this year will be April 17th and 18th.

Math

We have a brand new Math Program in which there are many activities with manipulatives. The textbook and many activities can be found online at: http://www.macmillanmh.com/ose and use access code: B9F9244F00.

The tests are cumulative, which helps keep new concepts fresh in our minds for our State Math Test on April 23rd and 24th.

Science

In Science, we use the Elementary Science Program kits for some units, as well as a text book. The kits are Electricity and Plant Responses. In fourth grade we also study: snails, food chains/food webs, magnetism/electricity, simple machines, and plant responses. We also review for the State Science Test. The State Science Manipulative Test is on a date still to be determined between May 23rd and June 1st. The Written Test is on June 4th, 2012.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, we use the Macmillan/McGraw Hill series to learn about the geography and history of New York and Long Island. The immigration of New York State is an underlying theme throughout the year.
