What's New?

Welcome to my kindergarten web site. I hope, by now, that you know that this is the place to be if you are in K3! In a few weeks you will become a first grader. You are always welcome to look back at this kindergarten site and maybe you will remember some of the fun things we did!

  • Summer is finally here! Summer vacation is just around the corner!
  • Thank you for all your help and support this year. I have enjoyed working with you and your child this kindergarten year!
  • Your child's report card will be given out the last day (one hour) of school. Their first grade teacher and supply list will be included.
  • Please do NOT buy the backpack that has wheels for next year. They are SO UNSAFE for young children!
  • Enjoy your first grade experience. I am sure that it will be all you hope it will be!

School Supplies
There will be a list of supplies that are needed for first grade in your child's last report card. This will help you get an early start and beat the school shopping crowd! I know that many children see the older children with the wheeled school bags. These can be very dangerous in the hands of a first grader! You might want to wait and get one when they are a little older and can navigate it better. Try to resist your child's tears!

Special Projects
  • Please remember that learning doesn't stop on June 22nd! Try to set up a special time, maybe in the morning before you begin your hectic day, to review kindergarten skills. Try to do this at least three times a week. Practice: upper case (capitals) and lower case letters one day, numbers from 0-31 another day
  • write simple sentences using sight words
  • keep a summer notebook/journal for writing and drawing pictures of summer activities or stories, etc.
  • end each day by discussing with each other the days adventures
  • READ and READ
  • have your child write me a letter or send me an e-mail-kindergartenjc@yahoo.com
  • the Bethpage Public Library's children's librarians are a great resource for finding new picture books and chapter books. They can help you find easy readers for your beginning readers.
  • book stores are a great place to just read a book and cool off (I always stop in to just browse and read the new selections, you don't have to buy!)
  • working with letter sounds is very important for beginning readers (if you didn't save the sound game cards go into the notebook and cut up the ones that are pasted in: have your child sort a small pile at a time by beginning sounds or by rhymes, or use them as part of a homemade Bingo game)
  • get some big sidewalk chalk and write words, letters, and sentences on the sidewalk
  • join the public library summer reading program
  • write letters to school friends or relatives
  • read poetry together on a picnic in the park or under a tree
  • rhyme words in a sing song way as you are driving somewhere
  • point out words that you see as you drive
  • xerox a page from a children's chapter book and have your child use a colored highlighter to highlight a particular letter or some words that you say
  • practice writing numbers and letters
  • keep a summer journal to practice writing

Summer's Here

Summer's here!
Another year
of school is at an end.
We've learned a lot
and grown a lot
and made a lot
of friends.
We'll say goodbye,
now summer's here,
it's time for us to part.
But we'll remember all our friends
and keep them in our hearts.
