Reading Recovery

Rocketing Central Boulevard Students into Reading

Reading Recovery is an individualized first grade reading program. Developed in New Zealand by Dr. Marie Clay, its objective is to help children become independent readers who monitor their own reading and use effective strategies when they get to something "tricky". Children are identified as candidates for the program through teacher identification and Reading Recovery literacy survey tasks.

The focus of the teaching of Reading Recovery is on strategies which can accelerate the reading process. Reading Recovery teachers support their students as they learn how our language works. They help their students see how they can use what they know to get to something new. These teachers never do for their students what their students can do for themsleves. Therefore, Reading Recovery students who have successfully completed the program become independent problem solvers in new text.

The goal of the program is that upon its completion the children perform within average achievement. These children continue to make progress during their regular classroom reading instruction and through independent reading of books at their level. They are on the path to becoming life-long independent readers.
