How to Be a Good Sporting Parent

Lead by example.  Kids often learn sportsmanship from their parents.  If you’re screaming on the sidelines about a bad call, your child will think that’s an appropriate way to act.  Also, it’s a good idea to talk to your children at a young age about how they should handle themselves during games as well as after a win or a loss.  An easy way to do this is by watching professional sport games together and pointing out incidences of good and bad sportsmanship.

Don’t criticize your child’s performance.  When he/she makes a mistake in the game, he/she know it.  If you point it out, it will only make him/her feel worse and possibly make him/her insecure to perform in front of you again.  Instead, ask your child questions about what he/she liked and didn’t like about the game and how he/she felt when he/she played.

ELK’S CLUB HOOP SHOOT

The Elk’s Club Basketball Hoop Shoot Contest is a nationally known program.  The Benevolent and Protection Order of Elks was formed in 1868 and is one of the oldest and largest fraternal organizations in the United States of America.  Over 3 million youngsters throughout the country compete each year shooting baskets in their local Elks organization.  Our Bethpage children are sponsored by the Hicksville Lodge #1931.  Winners go on through district contest, a regional contest, a state contest, an eastern regional and to the finals in Springfield, Massachusetts.  Our Bethpage school children participate at a school contest and high scorers are entered into the Lodge contest hosted at Bethpage High School.

Charles Campagne School had 72 participants and sent 30 children to the lodge contest at Bethpage High School.
