George McElroy

George became a Physical Education teacher in Bethpage in 1954.  He coached baseball, basketball and football.  Beginning in 1962 he served as Assistant Principal of the JFK Junior High School before becoming Principal of Bethpage High School in 1966.  He held that position for 19 years.  He was a beloved figure in a time of enormous change.  He and his good friend Tony Ducato, who served as Principal of JFK, were two pillars of the Bethpage School District for many years.  George also served as President of the Nassau County Secondary Principals Association.  He was always active in Bethpage community affairs and was President of the Bethpage Rotary Club. George has been deeply involved in Nassau County Athletics and served as President of the Section VIII Athletic Council.  He presently serves as Treasurer of Section VIII Athletics.  We believe he has attended more Golden Eagle sporting events than any other person in school history.  George mentored thousands of school administrators during his long tenure as Adjunct Professor of Educational Administration Programs at both Hofstra and C.W. Post.  He has been married to his wife Lynne for 61 years and they have 5 children, 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
