Marc Sieben

Marc Sieben graduated BHS in 1970.  Marc was Student Council President and played lacrosse and football.  He was in many ways, “Mr. Bethpage.”  He married his high school sweetheart, Madelyn Morante in 1974.  He went on to Adelphi where he broke the record for goals scored.  He became a Social Studies teacher at Bethpage High School and served as a lacrosse coach who inspired a love of the game among his players.  He later opted to go into the field of finance and had executive jobs at Smith Barney, Bank of America, UBS and eventually moved on to North Coast MetLife where he forged very close friendships with colleagues.  In all his positions, he was noted for his ability to lead and teach colleagues and to care for his many clients.

Marc’s in-laws, Mary and Nick Morante, were BHS institutions.  Mary worked at BHS for 46 years as the Attendance Officer.  Nick was a teacher of Driver’s Education and was considered the preeminent expert on all the state regulations dealing with driving in New York State.  Madelyn and Marc had two children- Nicole and Joanna- who graduated BHS.  Nicole went on for her PhD in English and is currently the Director of English Education programs at SUNY Old Westbury.  Joanna (with two Masters Degrees) teaches at Central Blvd. Elementary School in Bethpage.  Marc, Nicole and Joanna also coached lacrosse in the district together.  Marc developed and coached the Hofstra Women’s Club Lacrosse Team for the past 11 years with great success (undefeated and conference champs the past two years).  Marc and his brother Paul (BHS Class of 1965) both became influential in the world of collegiate women’s lacrosse.

In 2010 Marc assumed the position of President of the Bethpage Educational Foundation.  He wanted to give back to the school community that served him and his family so well.  He was a catalyst for the Foundation and began the process of trying to foster connections between alumni and their alma mater.  He was largely responsible for the Battle at Bethpage, bringing NCAA men’s and women’s lacrosse to Bethpage.  The Foundation thrived under his leadership and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars which it has directed to the Bethpage schools in the form of scholarships, teacher mini-grants and underwriting creative projects in literacy, the arts and technology.

Marc passed away this past summer leaving a void in our hearts and in our organization.  He was a man of the heart; he was a goal setter; and he was the true embodiment of a Golden Eagle who soared above the rest.  We miss him and honor his love of all things Bethpage.
