Gary Bretton

Gary Bretton graduated BHS in 1972.  He played football for legendary Coach Howie Vogts.  Interestingly, Gary opened Bretton’s Deli in 1971, as his senior year was just beginning.  This establishment on Broadway was a staple of the community and the place where people went not only for good food, but for the gregarious company of Gary and his brothers.  Several sandwiches were named for local folk heroes.

From this venue, Gary got to know thousands of residents of Bethpage.  He came to understand their needs and was determined to assist those he could help.  He set up the Bethpage Community Foundation and raised money through the Annual Bretton Bowl.  In total, the Foundation has raised over $750,000 and it has given that money away to countless families and residents who needed a helping hand.  Gary always has a sympathetic ear for any Bethpage community member.

Gary has also been active in the Bethpage Police Activities League and has been President of the organization for many years.  Gary believes sports is one vehicle for girls and boys to learn some life lessons and he has presided over a superb program.

Gary has also served as a Commissioner on the Bethpage Water District during its most difficult of times.  He was also a founding member of the Bethpage Chamber of Commerce and serves as its longtime President.

He has been a champion of all things Bethpage!
