Writing Workshop

What is it?

Like a carpenter, a writer builds images and ideas with words. Together, we will learn to utilize the tools necessary to build those images and ideas and develop the skills necessary to write forcefully and eloquently.

The core of your writing in English 7 will be composed in a Writing Folder that will be stored in the classroom. This will be your place to extend and diversify your writing and keep track of what you write-all the drafts and notes for the pieces you are working on.

How will it be graded?

Every final piece will be submitted for a process grade, which reflects the amount of revision, risk taking, and changing you have done as a writer on your piece. This grade will be worth 20% of your final grade during the first two marking periods. You will write several comprehensive pieces this year, including a persuasive essay, friendly letter, and a business letter of complaint.

However, it is important for you to remember that no grade is ever final in Writing Workshop. If for any reason you are dissatisfied with a grade you are encouraged to discuss your reasons with Ms. G or continue to work on your piece and use a peer editor to help you revise it. You may then resubmit a piece for a rewrite grade.

Final Thoughts:

Use your experiences in Writing Workshop to experiment, take chances, and assess your development as a writer. You may be surprised by what it can teach you!
