February

This month we will be working on activites and reading literature related to winter, snow, dental health, the Superbowl, Groundhog's Day, Valentine's Day, and the 100th Day of School! The entire school will be dedicating the week of February 13th to discussions and activities on preventing and dealing with bullying at school.

Our language arts program, Treasures, focuses on the theme Neighborhoods for Unit 6. The boys and girls write in their journals each day responding to the literature we have read in class. Please check your child's folder for home-school connection pamphlets from our language arts program. The pamphlets will tell you what books we are reading, and give you activities to work on at home, as well as the sight words we are working on each week. We are focusing on the sight words you and for this week. We will continue to review the sight words I, can, we, the, like, a, see, go, to, have, is, play and are as well. The colorful mini-books sent home at the end of the week will review the sight words we are working on. Take a moment and have your child read the book to you. They should point to each word as they read. They are doing an outstanding job!

We have finished introducing all of the lowercase letters in our Fundations program. We will be learing the formation of the uppercase letters quickly since those are easier and more recognizable for the students. The students practice letter formation on individual whiteboards and work with magnetic letters as well to reinforce sounds and letter recognition. We will begin focusing on "tapping out" consonant-vowel-consonant words (CVC words) such as vet, rug, and hat. We are also learning the difference between letters and words, punctuation such as periods and exclamation marks, rhyming, counting words in a sentence, and counting syllables in a word.

A special thank you to Mrs. Gallego for coming in to celebrate Lunar New Year with us! Kyle and Sasha looked amazing in their festive outfits! Gung Hey Fat Choy!

Our math chapter this month focuses on Numbers through 20.
